Stories of HOPE

Every story begins with someone choosing to believe that change is possible. Here, we share real stories from our community—families who have found stability, neighbors who have extended compassion, and partners who make hope happen every day.

Each story reminds us that homelessness is not the end of a person’s story. With the right support, a new chapter begins. Together, we are Opening Doors, Transforming Lives, and Unlocking Potential in Calloway County.

Paula's Story

When Paula first reached out to HOPE Calloway in 2021, her world had been turned upside down. She had just been diagnosed with cancer, lost her job because of her illness, and suddenly found herself raising her two young granddaughters on her own. Overnight, everything changed. She was fighting to hold it all together while simply trying to survive.

When she came to us for help, our team worked closely with Paula to find the best path forward for her family. We knew that moving into a shelter wasn’t the right fit—instead, she needed long-term stability. Through our outreach program, we were able to provide financial assistance, coaching, and practical support. That help allowed her to move into a new home quickly, keep her granddaughters safe, and begin rebuilding her life.

HOPE Calloway became part of Paula’s journey of restoration. She found not just stability, but dignity. She still recalls the relief of knowing that even simple needs—like running out of toilet paper—were met with care, not judgment. With steady encouragement and guidance, her confidence began to grow, and she found the courage to take her next steps forward.

In June 2024, Paula returned to HOPE Calloway in a new role—this time as part of our team. Through the S-CSEP program at West KY Allied, she joined us as a receptionist, greeting everyone with the same kindness and compassion she once received. Today, she serves as our Administrative Assistant, keeping our daily operations running smoothly and helping drive our mission forward in countless ways.

Even while fighting stage 4 cancer, Paula continues to show up each day with a smile and a spirit of grace. She was recently recognized by the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce as one of their Business Friendly Faces, a reflection of the light she brings to others. Paula often reminds clients not to feel embarrassed or ashamed for needing help—because she knows exactly how it feels to sit on the other side of the table.

Paula’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and hope. She came to HOPE Calloway seeking support, and now she’s part of the team providing it. Her journey has come full circle, reminding us that HOPE isn’t just about housing—it’s about meeting people where they are, walking beside them through the storm, and helping them find the strength to build a brighter future.
